Auriculotherapy Health Benefits

Auriculotherapy, also known as auricular therapy or ear acupuncture, is a technique which had its origin in Lyon, France. Auricular therapy incorporates the fundamentals of modern medical science based on neurophysiology and neurology, and concepts of traditional acupuncture. This technique is based on the idea that the entire body is represented on the auricle - meaning the outer portion of the ear and so the entire body can be effectively treated by applying stimulation on the surface of the ear.

Auricular therapy can be considered as the most successful way to quit smoking and many people have benefited by this. Auricular therapy applies light stimulations to exact points on the external ear. It is a form of acupuncture treatment with a difference that needles are not used, and so there is no chance of experiencing pain.

Auricular medicine originated in China and has since then been developed in Europe to attain its present state. The treatment consists of analyzing the external ear and treating problems associated with different parts of the body. After years of careful observation, Chinese medical professionals have charted more than 200 sites on the ear associated with various diseases.

Auricular Therapy has been used for thousands of years. Early Chinese doctors used the ear in diagnosis and treatment. Hippocrates bled points behind the ears for impotence and sciatic pain. In the European Middle Ages medical texts report treatment the of ear for sciatic pain. In 1956, Dr. Paul Nogier of France, developed a complete map of the ear as a reflex system.

First and foremost patients must be sure that the acupuncturist or doctor they see is trained and experienced in the specialty of Auricular Acupuncture (not just Acupuncture as taught by Universities). Most people who are knowledgeable in this method will have done training within specific clinics overseas, in Europe, or the United States. There are only a few practitioners in Australia that are able to utilise this method effectively.

Auricular Reflexology techniques encourage a person to relax completely, and improve the blood circulation in the body. Reflexology is most commonly thought to apply only to the feet, but Auricular Therapy or as it is called "Ear Reflexology" has also been practiced for centuries. "Traditional Chinese medicine" which has the classic text known as "The Yellow Emperor's Medicine Classic" shows the relation between the body and the auricle.

One of the most surprising aspects of auricular therapy is that almost any condition can benefit from auricular treatment. Treatment of pain, stress, insomnia, addictions, anxiety, arthritis, headaches, menopause and many other conditions can be enhanced with the addition of auricular therapy. It is intended to be an adjunct to other forms of therapy.

This form of therapy can be used to help people overcome addictions to drugs and alcohol. It can be done in different sessions depending on the severity of one's condition or disease. Needles are inserted to a depth of about three to five millimeters so as to achieve a proper twinge. They are then left to stay for about fifteen to twenty minutes.
